Subject: Call for papers, SAA 2020, "Slavery in the Americas: Archaeology
and Archives"
To: Linda Stine <[log in to unmask]>
Dear Colleagues,
I am co-organizing, with Linda Stine, a session for the 2020 SAA meeting
titled "Slavery in the Americas: Archaeology and Archives." We would like
to invite you to submit a contribution to this session. The provisional
abstract is below and will be edited to reflect specific contributions once
they have been determined.
If you are interested in participating, please let us know as soon as
possible and follow with an abstract (emailed to Claire at this address) by
August 28th. As a reminder: the SAA submission deadline is September 5th.
Please also share this call for papers with your colleagues working in
relevant areas!
*Session abstract:*
This session examines theoretical and methodological approaches to studying
the history of slavery in the Americas (North, Central, and South America
including the Caribbean) through material and written records. While the
value of archival resources to the study of enslaved populations is clear,
so are the tensions between material and archival records and the biases
and lacunae in written histories of marginalized peoples. Presenters in
this session are invited to contribute papers relevant to the study of
slavery in the Americas that: present new methods and/or resources relevant
to archaeological and archival research, critically examine the complex
relationships between archival and archaeological records, provide examples
in the form of case studies that combine archaeological and archival
sources. Submissions highlighting interdisciplinary engagement are
encouraged.
Best Regards,
Dr. Claire Heckel and Dr. Linda Stine
