hi everyone, I'm looking to gather a session for SHA on mothering and
archaeology. Please think broadly, this is not just for women! Email me if
interested or with comments/questions/thoughts.
“Women’s Work: Community Archaeology and Mothering, or Nasty Women Seek
Solutions”
We seek reflective papers on all aspects of mothering and archaeology: the
archaeology of mothers, the actions of “mothering” in archaeology, and the
“second shift” in archaeology jobs. How has becoming a mother affected your
archaeological practice or career? Why are women doing most of the deeply
engaged community archaeology with all of its additional relationships and
social navigation?
Female identifying archaeologists often take on a disproportionate amount
of labor, particularly emotional labor both in their careers and in the
home. They are often asked to or even required to “mother”, meaning care
for, the rest of the staff, students, and interns more than their
male-identifying colleagues. The goal of this session is to bring “those
conversations” we women have amongst ourselves to the larger Society and
have an honest reckoning with how to create a more equitable discipline.
thanks,
Laura Seifert
