Ms. Kline,
I could be wrong, but I've always assumed that metal, particularly a
relatively large metal item like a revolver, would be difficult to x-ray
in much detail since it is a conductor. It seems likely that the metal
item would appear as a very bright area of the x-ray image in the
general shape of the gun.
In this case, wouldn't a loaded gun just appear as a single entity in
the image? Or, is it possible to calibrate the x-ray instrumet to
differentiate between dissimilar metals i.e steel frame & barrel, lead
bullets, brass cases?
This will be interesting to learn. In a cursory search on the Net, I was
unable to locate any reference to using x-ray technology to identify
metal found within metal. Please share your results if you are
ultimately able to have the imaging done.
Good luck,
--

It has been suggested that we x-ray it to find out if it’s still loaded. If anyone in the northern New England area has access to an x-ray machine or knows someone who might, please feel free to contact me directly. Thanks again.

Except in very rare instances, once you have noted the specific qualities of your UXO such as caliber and headstamp - and this was question was directed at ammunition - there is no need to curate something that is effectively a small bomb. If it can be rendered inert without destruction, more's the better, but if not, it does not need to be curated.

>> Hi all - you most certainly do not want to contact the police or a military base, unless it is the Marine Corps, or your object will be destroyed. A previous post by Bob Neyland, Head, Underwater Archaeology, NHHC detailed this very issue with regard to UXO. The Marines can deal with this without destroying your object if you can find someone at one of their bases to take this on. The more important issue here is that the object will deteriorate significantly without immediate and appropriate conservation.
