Hey HISTARCHERS,
We recently recovered a mystery object from a late 19th-century residential
privy context at a site in Detroit. The object is a small brass canister
mounted on an equally small brass post, with a thin strip of paper coiled
up inside the canister. The back of the canister is missing, and the front
is heavily corroded, but appears to have at least two words embossed on
it (one arching across the top and the other across the bottom).
Unfortunately corrosion has obscured all but a few of the letters, so we
can't make out what the words are ("...LL...[B or R]O" across the top and
"...ON..." [or "...NO..."] across the bottom). The canister itself is about
2 cm in diameter and 0.7 cm deep. Here are some photos:

(I'm not sure the link is going to work; if it doesn't, just email me and
I'll send the photos to people directly.)
Thanks in advance,
Bob
