Hello!
The latest issue of the "Old Pueblo Archaeology" quarterly bulletin has just
been published! This issue's feature article by archaeologist Dr. Aaron M.
Wright is titled "A Reorientation in Understanding Hohokam Rock Art." In it,
Aaron, the author of Religion on the Rocks: Hohokam Rock Art, Ritual
Practice, and Social Transformation, summarizes a new perspective he has
developed on the organization and changes in Hohokam ritual practice and
religious authority, based on his archaeological investigation of Hohokam
petroglyphs in the South Mountains, located near the confluence of the Gila
and Salt Rivers in Arizona "at the heart of the Hohokam World." His
scientific, quantitative analyses have helped show how rock art can help
archaeologists answer questions about the past at regional and local scales,
and about the people who made and used rock art.
A second article in this issue discusses some of the key players who made
Old Pueblo Archaeology Center's 2016 "Mimbres Ruins, Rock Art, and Museums
of Southern New Mexico" tour a success. The issue is rounded out with three
reports by students from Tucson's Mesa Verde Elementary School about their
hypothesis-testing experiences when they participated in Old Pueblo's
"OPEN3" simulated archaeological excavation field-trip and, as usual, a list
of some upcoming presentations, tours, and other activities that are being
offered by Old Pueblo Archaeology Center in the coming months.
Like every issue, this latest one is written in a nontechnical format,
includes ample illustrations, and is published electronically in pdf format
for on-line access. Each issue of "Old Pueblo Archaeology" includes one or
more feature articles about southwestern archaeology, history, or cultures
and provides news about Old Pueblo Archaeology Center's activities and
program offerings.
