NAS and SPMA Annual Conference 2015: Coastal and Maritime Archaeology of the Modern Era
University of Portsmouth, UK
21—22 November 2015

The Society for Post-Medieval Archaeology is pleased to be partnering with the Nautical Archaeology Society to host a joint conference on Coastal and Maritime Archaeology of the Modern Era.

The aim of the joint conference is to bridge the gap between terrestrial and marine archaeology audiences, focusing on the post-medieval period from the 16th century to the present day.

We are particularly interested in the way that ships and shipping are generative of the modern world. Terrestrial archaeologists often study sites and assemblages either produced for or procured by maritime trade and warfare and yet there is a disconnect between the two sub-disciplines. The scope of the conference is not restricted to Britain and Ireland, and papers from other countries and areas will be welcome.

Call for Papers

Papers are invited on the following themes:

- Protected wrecks and the work of UK licensee groups;
- The coastal and marine archaeology of conflict;
- Maritime landscapes, including ports and docks, the shoreline, ships and shipping
- The opportunities provided by the study of maritime finds assemblages to study processes of change, e.g. social and mercantile developments.

Proposals should be for 25 minute papers, and there will also be time set aside for discussion.
Proposals for poster and other displays to be set up in the Portland Building’s atrium area will also be welcome.
Please send an abstract of no more than 300 words to Mark Beattie-Edwards: [log in to unmask] of the NAS and Brian Kerr: [log in to unmask] of the SPMA, to arrive no later than the 1st May 2015.

Further information about the conference can be found on the websites of the SPMA: http://www.spma.org.uk/events/conference2015/ and NAS: http://www.nauticalarchaeologysociety.org/content/nas-spma-conference-2015
