The main driver of the varroa problem in North America and possibly
Europe is the preponderance of colonies in which mites have positive
population growth, or an "r" higher than one. Since this depends
largely on bee traits, there are a lot of very bad genes out there.
If it only were possible to produce colonies with negative mite
population growth, or an r less than 1.
