Randy: So I'm not at all surprised by your observations in Montana".
We almost always get a 1-2 week thaw in January. Typically, it's cold in December, thaws mid-Jan, and then often get coldest in February. I have seen occasional small patches of brood appear if we have a particularly warm and long thaw. But that's also when some spring flowers pop through the ground and rural papers comment on seeing a few grasshopper, etc. All of these are anomalies, and won't survive the return of winter. I've even seen (rare) some trees and shrubs start to bud - that's really bad of the plants.
