> In the absence of DWV, a very large mite population are required to kill a mature honey bee colony7 due to haemolymph removal during feeding. Since healthy colonies in South Africa have been reported to regularly maintain mite populations of 30,000–50,000. Whereas, in the presence of DWV the number of mites needed to kill a mature colony becomes vastly reduced to just a couple of thousand mites.
