I don't have the book to hand, but there are more recent guidelines. I would check out:

Büchler, Ralph, et al. "Standard methods for rearing and selection of Apis mellifera queens." Journal of Apicultural Research 52.1 (2013): 1-30.

The COLOSS publications are uniformly thorough and authoritative, IMHO.
