In the broodless period all mites are phoretic. Maybe they are then
exposed to some grooming behaviour of the bees resulting in higher
losses. Are the nurse bees bored and spend their time housekeeping?
But if a broodless period of 2 weeks significantly reduces the varroa
load, why does the winter break not wipe them out?
