I put a 2" rim on top of the brood box in the autumn to facilitate
baggie feeding. It stays on the hive until the winter wrap comes off
in early May(usually), but is used earlier for syrup & pollen subst.

The general practice here is to do the same but the argument is that
having top & bottom entrances on the same side eliminates the
possibility of cross ventilation with wind as both have the same
pressure(almost)
