Here in Montana, our fall pollen sources can be scant. The best beekeeper I've met in MT in terms of overwintering success and strong colonies believed in going into the winter with lots of bees - the more the better. He also help back a pallet of honey supers which he covered and stocked in each yard in late fall. He'd check hives in Feb - and if they needed, go over and dig the honey supers out of snow and add to colonies. His colonies were always busting at the seams in the spring - and he wanted it that way. Our spring comes late and our honey flows come on fast. He figured every extra bee in the spring was a jump on the honey crop, and I saw his records. He had, at the time, the highest documented yields in the state.
