Peter: Hawaiian papayas are GMO and higher yield than non-GMO.
I met a scientist working on papayas while traveling in Hawaii a couple of years ago. He told me that the future of the crop is hanging by a fragile thread. The genetics have become so limited (the plants are practically clones) that any new disease could wipe them all out. He and other papaya researchers are fully occupied trying to prevent that from happening.
So....not sure what to make of that as an example, because the crop has increased but the risk of "losing it all" is now much greater.
There are of course other non-GMO cultivars of papaya grown elsewhere, but many (most??) are not as tasty. A Hawaiian papaya with lemon juice...yummy.
Luckily for us we don't clone bees, and as far as I know there are no GMO bees.
