the fibers just seems to entangle their feet.  I use the unseated kind and have used both the swiffer duster brand name and the generic brand (Krogers) and although both will capture the adult small hive beetle the 'brand' name pads seem to work better than the generic kind.  

I have also noticed that hives that seem to porpoise more also tend to have less problems with the small hive beetle.
