Wonder if that's because majority of those who keep bees without treatments tend be small time beekeepers and don't get the "exposure" that bigger outfits would.
I get by without treatments by doing splits and implementing brood breaks. It's not perfect, and definitely not the solution to the mite issue, but it works for me. I also monitor mite levels in my 45 or so colonies and raise queens from those that are productive, healthy and have lower mite counts.
