Daytime treatment would certainly be easier in many ways and your arguments about types of bees targetted and cluster make sense.
I quit stopping entrances a few years ago when my counts were not affected by failure to do so. I get the same mite kill either way and not stopping the entrances keeps the bees calmer. I just wait until I'm getting vapor out of the cracks around the top board and move on.
