The elephant in the room is real data.  Given the season and the ease of availability,  any seriously curious researcher could simple get samples from the Midwest and prove the theory,  several gatherings a year would even be possible should one want to cherry pick when corn is tasseling and some foraging on contamination is present.
No need to feed caged bees.
