For Immediate Release
Hello!
Old Pueblo Archaeology bulletin number 89 has just been published!
This issue's lead article, "Shuudag: 'O'odham Weather, and Sources and Uses
of Water," was authored by Harry J. Winters, Jr., PhD, who describes himself
as a geological engineer who has had a lifelong friendship with many
'O'odham throughout their lands, a fluent speaker of the 'O'odham language,
author of
<https://www.oldpueblo.org/dr-harry-j-winters-jr-oodham-place-names-and-mari
copa-place-names/> 'O'odham Place Names (2012, 2020) and Maricopa Place
Names
<https://www.oldpueblo.org/dr-harry-j-winters-jr-oodham-place-names-and-mari
copa-place-names/> (2018), and a person who "speaks enough of the Maricopa
and Yavapai languages not to starve in their company"! In his Shuudag essay
he discusses the importance of water to Indigenous Desert People (Tohono
'O'odham) and River People (Akimeli 'O'odham) and different words they used
to identify various occurrences of water, but also clouds, fog, haze, and
rain, surface water runoff and erosion, downstream vs. upstream terms (which
may be interchangeable with cardinal directions), the motion of water,
watering places, desert farming, and groundwater. This issue should be of
interest not only to 'O'odham but also to linguists, cultural
anthropologists, historians, and archaeologists who seek to interpret how
ancient peoples adapted to the western US deserts.
Incidentally, Dr. Winters is scheduled to give a presentation titled
'O'odham Place Names: Meanings, Origins and Histories for Old Pueblo
Archaeology Center's "Third Thursday Food for Thought" free Zoom online
series on Thursday July 20 at 7 pm Arizona time (Pacific Daylight Time).

Rebecca Orozco of two 2022 issues of The Smoke Signal (the quarterly
publication of the Tucson Corral of the Westerners); an article about the
recent resurrection of Old Pueblo Archaeology Center's Sabino Canyon Ruin
archaeological excavation project; a tribute to Monica Young (now in her
eleventh year as Old Pueblo's President!), and information about some of Old
Pueblo's upcoming activities.
Like every Old Pueblo Archaeology issue, this latest one is written in a
nontechnical format, includes ample illustrations, and is published
electronically in pdf format for on-line access. Each issue of Old Pueblo
Archaeology includes one or more feature articles about southwestern
archaeology, history, or cultures and provides news about Old Pueblo
Archaeology Center's activities and program offerings. All previous issues
