Afternoon everyone,
Below are two sessions sponsored by SHA's Heritage at Risk Committee (HARC). If interested in participating in either/both, please contact the organizer listed for each session below.
Beyond the Shoreline: Heritage at Risk at Inland Sites
Organizer: Emily Jane Murray [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>
As archaeologists, resources managers, and other heritage professionals have turned their attention to the growing concerns of climate change, much of this work focuses on coastal issues including sea level rise and erosion. However, inland sites are also at risk from a wide variety of climate change impacts and ongoing environmental factors. These sites face threats from increased forest fires, flooding, temperature changes, increased storminess, and more. This session will explore heritage at risk beyond the shoreline, examining impacts and threats to inland sites as well as the strategies for response including documentation and mitigation.
3-Minute Climate Stories: Round 2
Organizer: Emma Dietrich [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>
Climate Stories provide a way to effectively communicate how climate change has impacted cultural heritage sites in the past and today. As archaeologists, we have an intimate knowledge of places and their deep histories, positioning us to tell meaningful climate stories. The National Parks Service initiative 'Every Place has a Climate Story' (Rockman and Maase 2017) outlines four themes in creating effective Climate Stories to increase impact with public visitors; Change in the Material World, Change in Experience and Lifeways, Insights from Past Societies, Origins of the Modern Climate Solution. Using the AND-BUT-THEREFORE (ABT) method (Olson 2015), championed by the NPS, panelists will present 3-minute climate story videos using the ABT method followed by a discussion guided by Sarah Miller and other archaeologists.
