Archeology Research Associate: Native American Consultation
The National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT) helps preservationists, Universities and other agencies to find better tools, better materials, and better approaches to conserving and proactively managing cultural resources. NCPTT pushes the envelope of current preservation practice by exploring advances in science and technology in other fields and applying them to issues in cultural resources management. One of those better approaches is to facilitate better consultations methods between Federal Agency's and Native American Indian Tribes for diplomatic and compliance regulations.
Along those lines, the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training announces a research associate-ship for a period up to twenty-four (24) months to assist the Chief of Archeology to initiate and conduct Nation-to-Nation consultation between the four Air Force Plants and the culturally affiliated Native American tribes. The four installations, which are the focus of this effort: Air Force Plant 4 (Texas); Air Force Plant 6 (Georgia), Air Force Plant 42 (California) and Air Force Plant 44 (Arizona). The project will utilize National Park Service (NPS) experts specialized in tribal relations to facilitate consultation meetings between the Air Force and culturally affiliated tribal leaders at a mutually designated place.
The ultimate goal of this project is to develop Installation Tribal Relations Plans for each of the four Air Force Plants. Effective communications and technologies are key aspects of the study. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) will provide the framework and will be enhanced by Archeological evidence as well a Traditional Environmental Knowledge provided by the consulting parties. Complimentary technologies such as data derived from geophysics, LiDAR and satellite imagery will augment the database as will traditional cultural knowledge, ethnographic accounts, and archeological evidence. The end-product for each facility will be an enriched GIS Installation Tribal Relations Plan.
Desired Skill/Qualifications: The position requires an individual who is outgoing and knowledgeable regarding ethnography and Nation-to-Nation consultation methods. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, verbally and in writing. Public speaking is required as is the ability to assist in the facilitation of high-level consultations. GIS skills are a must as are Microsoft Office programs. The preferred candidate will be a Masters student or recent PhD graduate in Anthropology, or related field.
Position is funded by a cooperative agreement between NSU and the National Park Service's National Center for Preservation Technology and Training.
Length of Time Position Needed: Up to twenty-four (24) months

Number of Hours Position will work: 40 hours per week.
Work is temporary.
Will I get paid?
Yes. Our research associates are short-term employees of Northwestern State University. Compensation is based on experience, including academic experience. Depending on your personal spending habits, the compensation provided is typically more than sufficient to cover living expenses during your stay in Natchitoches.
Is housing provided?
Housing is not provided. However, Natchitoches is a college town and there are usually plenty of sublets and short-term rentals available.
