Hi Trevor
My understanding is that bumble bee colonies funtion similar to wasp nests.
I mean, at the end of the season the colony produces lots of queens and
drones for securing next season nests. Mated queen winter alone and start
by them self next season colonies.
Based on that I conclude:
1.- there are no drones most of the year in the colonies
2.- Drones are produced for mating the queen ergo do not work much.
