Elizabeth, Thanks. I passed this onto the historians here. It has this place written all over it. Lison is too rich for my pocket. I wrote her a note and told her that maybe we should do s session here on the Gulf Coast somewhere.
We ought to copy cat and do this at the Louisiana History meetings. I can't keep up with everybody. This is a great theme for here don't you think. Maybe we could do this at a Creole Heritage meeting sometimes. I sent this all to
Dr. Kent Peacock the new director of the Center. He is a Florida State PhD. Worked awhile at the Appalache mission. Has ahistory and American Studiews degree. The Center shoudtake a more academic turn.
Lets keep in touch. Thanks.
Pete

Dear all,

I'm writing because, along with a historian colleague of mine (cc'ed here), I am organizing a session for the 2023 SHA meetings in Lisbon on "Teaching the Colonial Encounter" (Draft session abstract below). If you or any colleagues would like to join us, please drop me a line! If you know of anybody who might be interested, please feel free to just share it with them directly and they can email me. We are especially interested in 1. Getting a very broad geographic representation, and 2. Considering education/teaching broadly in all possible contexts!

As others have noted, the deadline of June 30 is soon!

Best,
Elizabeth

"Teaching the Colonial Encounter"

Historical archaeology offers opportunities to connect people with historical moments in a way little else can. This session will explore the power of bringing archaeology and history into the same educational space, whether classroom or museum, with discussions of innovative and exciting approaches to teaching the colonial encounter. We will discuss best practices for engagement and community building, in and out of the classroom, and explore effective tools for sparking enthusiasm for history. Historical archaeology's strength is in its ability to bring the subaltern voice to the table, and each paper will highlight the ways in which the discipline can make uniquely concrete-and at times, visceral-the experience of all actors in the colonial encounter.
