As an undergrad I worked on the chapel complex excavation. It is my recollection that while some burials dated to a later period, the site was essentially abandoned in the 1830s. If it was used for refuse after 1835 and up through the 1920s that wouldn't surprise me. Do you have any dates on what was dumped at the site? That could guide you to some possible explanation for its presence. I remember some stories about intermittent use of the site before the Serra Museum was built in the 1920s, but I don't recall a lot of "trash" being documented when I was digging there, except perhaps all the chapel roof and floor tiles I had to haul, weigh, and document from the area I was assigned to excavate in the late 70s.
