Nice observation, Charlie. Without any pollen coming in, I would not
expect them to initiate broodrearing, despite the heavy syrup feeding. The
lack of broodrearing may have been the reason for their good survival.
Question: when did they finally initiate broodrearing--before first natural
pollen, or after pollen began coming in?
