Yes, I apologize for over-simplifying.
The process merely begins with breaking the ionic bonds.
The overall reaction is exothermic, and this is the reason for caution when
diluting acids with water, but this caution seems misplaced for acetic.
But all of this stuff will sting like the dickens if you get any in your
eye!
