Expressions of interest are warmly invited for participation in the 2016 SHA conference 3-minute artifact forum 'artifacts and journeys'.

Forum abstract:
Though there are important exceptions, most of the artifacts we excavate and analyse are not recovered at their point of production; they have to travel from where they were produced to where they were used and discarded. Sometimes these journeys are short, perhaps moving from one part of a property to another. At other times, these journeys are very long indeed, such as Staffordshire ceramics recovered from an archaeological site in New Zealand. The nature of these journeys often has much to tell us about trade, economics, population movements, individual households, and other issues on both macro and micro scales. This year the 3-minute artifact forum looks the journeys taken by artifacts (and the people who use them) to examine these issues via the informal and fast-paced - but still academic - discussion and debate that's come to characterise this popular recurring SHA conference forum.

Quoting/paraphrasing from the Call for Papers... The 3-minute forum is an informal—but still academic—discussion group consisting of a number of rapid three-minute presentations followed by discussion. Typically, these sessions last for at least an hour and consist of blocks of 4 or 5 presentations that are only 3 minutes in length, followed by 10–15 minutes of question-and-answer discussion on the papers. This format permits rapid presentation and discussion in a relaxed and convivial forum format.

Participation in the 3-minute forum does not count against your primary author quota; you can present a formal 20-minute paper (or organise a symposium) and still participate in the forum.

To participate, send an e-mail to 2016 forum chair Alasdair Brooks at [log in to unmask] confirming your interest and including a title. I'll then add you to the list of forum participants in the online submission system. You won't need to include an abstract.

By all means contact me directly if you have any questions.

With thanks,

Alasdair Brooks
