Apologies I should have been more specific.
I'm asking this for a collegue.
A possible alternate identification is a backgammon token.

What they found is a black glass disk.  One side appears to have had 
decoration; the other side has an indented area.

Sorry, you didn't specify the material. I had assumed you meant a standard 
metal disk button variety with a metal shank loop or box.
