ANNOUNCING THE “INDIGENOUS INTERESTS” ONLINE LECTURE SERIES

The new “Indigenous Interests” collaboration of Old Pueblo
Archaeology Center and Arizona Humanities will provide an avenue for
communication between Native Americans and non-Indians that can result in
more understanding of each other’s cultures, traditions, histories,
viewpoints, philosophies, and ways of life. The presenters, who are members
of Native Nations, will share their thoughts about the human experience;
what it means to be human and Native American; how peoples of different
cultures relate to one another; comparative religions, ethics, history,
jurisprudence, language acquisition and retention, and philosophy; and how
archaeology and anthropology are viewed by their Native American subjects of
study.

Except through general-public and Indian-owned-and-operated news
media, Arizona Tribal communities have relatively few avenues for sharing
their interests and concerns with the general public, presenting Indigenous
points of view that may differ from those of non-Indian Americans, and
getting feedback and support from members of other communities. Old Pueblo’s
Indigenous Interests Zoom Presentations project bridges this gap by offering
a venue for Indigenous people to present their perspectives to interested
members of the public, and by providing opportunities for speaker and
listener interaction. This will benefit those attending the presentations,
as well as the Indigenous presenters themselves, by providing each of them
with new knowledge about the various communities and cultures that are part
of the American social fabric. After the presentations are completed, both
the presenters and persons attending the webinars can share what they have
learned from the presentations and the post-presentation discussions with
others who have not attended. The potential result will be civil discourse
and better understandings of others’ views.

Each presentation will be in the Zoom Webinar format and will be
hosted by Martina Dawley (Hualapai-Diné) and Maegan Lopez, two Native
American members of Old Pueblo Archaeology Center’s Board of Directors. They
will encourage attendees to type questions and comments into the Zoom
Webinar’s Q&A box while the speakers are presenting so that the hosts can
relay participants’ questions and comments to the speaker following each
presentation.

Humanities) for providing funding for these first six presentations in the
