Thanks Dave!

This was my thought also. The owner currently thinks it is an ancient petroglyph. But it doesn’t look like any other petroglyph in the regional traditions.

The literature on the UK ordinance survey says that in the 1800s, the top groove was used by the rod person to set the consistent point for elevation. The set brass plaques come later. But there is no sign of that at this site. Given the specific location, there isn’t a good reason for it to have been surveyed and marked in the 1880s or 1890s as there isn’t any mining nearby.

It could be that it was marked during the 1840s survey, but I don’t think so. Instead, my current feeling is that IF its a survey mark, it is more likely from the 1770s survey by the Brits or the 1660s survey by the French. It might also just be some type of blaze or claim mark- indicating the land is the property of one crown or another.

Who the hell knows?

Anyway, I pushed this out to the history community because I am curious if anyone in the English or French academic circles have ever seen the symbol before from earlier contexts. Not that this would prove anything, but I thought it would be worth a shot.

Thanks for asking around!
Best,
Tim
