As I recall, Broookhaven National Laboratory, on Long Island, was formerly in WWI Camp Upton, the Upton toponym survives as a weather gathering center. When a particle accelerator, ISABELA, was proposed an archaeological survey was conducted by archaeologist Edward Johanneman, MA and he had found training trenches, inthe former location of the camp where troops, seen ill-equiped practiced with broomsticks, in trenches. I'm not sure of his report location, but a more recent one can be found ("PRIVY SITE at BROOKHAVEN NATIONAL LABORATORY ... Institute for Long Island Archaeology, Stony Brook University ..... the general vicinity of the study area include part of a complex of World War I era training trenches, foundations,.") in the testing for the location of a large solar array: http://www.lipower.org/pdfs/company/projects/solar/BPBNLstudy.pdf
"Yip Yip Yaphank" and other "propaganda" tunes were written about it.
