Didn't Dr. Seeley's work find the opposite of #1, while confirming #2?
As for #3, my understanding was that feral colonies coat the interior walls
of their cavities with propolis. If so, It should remove many of the
"moisture absorbing" qualities that the "live" tree had, although arguably
not all of them.
