That's a great question Fiona.  With the high cost of registered treatments
in the U.S., it is actually cheaper for us to wash a hive than to treat.  I
could save a lot of money by only treated those hives that have high mite
levels.

I've yet to see any study as to the efficacy of doing so.  It would depend
a lot on the surrounding bee population outside the apiary.
