Perhaps they pick up on patterns in changing temperatures?  Maybe it is
similar to how birds generally seem to time their migrations to arrive with
favourable weather or food conditions?

In this area, weather is much easier to predict in the colder months when
systems tend to be much larger.  On hot humid days in the summer it is
incredibly difficult to predict when systems can be much smaller.
