I have had good success increasing the winter cluster size of weaker
colonies doing just this. For example this season the growth rate of early
July splits was stemmed due to a significant dearth/drought. The fall
flow got them back going, but wasn't enough. Sub sustained an extra round
of brood rearing to get them up to a better cluster size for wintering.
