I spent several afternoons driving around this county trying to get some photos of field margins. Actually, they are very common in this area. Often there is a wide margin between what the farmer plows and what the county mows. 

In many cases these margins appear to be avoided because of telephone poles. I don't know if they are official right of ways owned by utility companies, it would seem so. 

Anyway, I rarely saw crops going "right up to the asphalt." These margins had dozens of species growing in them. There has also been some effort expended to try to get utility companies to change their practice of clear cutting under the high tension poles. 

Actually, cultivating shrubs in these areas is better than clear cutting to prevent the buildup of trees. Plus, the shrubbery is an excellent wildlife habitat.
