Ok, a stupid question then: a couple of inches of sand spread under all the hives in an apiary wouldn't solve this problem permanently in non-CA climates?
Not sure, but I think it would help! According to Jamie Ellis the beetle larva will crawl a LONG ways (300 feet or better) to find a suitable place to burrow in..... I do see them as organized but very random in their movements, I would say the majority of them would not make more than 10 feet.
