I have sent an email to Dr. Huang asking for a copy of the paper in question, hoping they address the issue of effects on the bee in the text.
In the article they mention that this gene silencing procedure is already used to suppress cattle tick reproduction.
Being able to target the Varroa would spare us having to either risk honey bee genomic diversity or bend it into a shape that would obviate most of the reasons for keeping bees at all.
And gene silencing offers the hope of not just control, but possibly eradication.
