Hah, there's one in every crowd. Actually, Canadians think of Northern California as south, and here on the US East Coast, bees are brought in from the southern states and Hawaii. But the European honey bee was originally winter hardy. The Italian and Carniolans originated in the Alps. I doubt they have changed much in 150 years.
