Participants will learn the basics of keeping honey bees, including bee biology and history, care of bees throughout the year, state and federal bee laws, and how to recognize and treat common honey bee ailments and pests. By the end of this course, participants will be able to manage honey bee colonies for maximum bee health and honey production. This course delves deeper into the life and ecology of the honey bee. Topics include honey bees' interaction with other native pollinators, honey marketing and labeling, evaluating scientific literature, and bee poisoning and pollinator protection. Instruction includes the use of microscopy and other tools used in diagnosing diseases and pests as well as alternative methods for the treatment of these ailments.
