To add to what Medhat wrote in response to Chris's questions the Varroa jacobsoni is on the Apis cerana Java genotype which is the strain of Asian bee that has turned up on the islands in the Pacific i.e. Solomons and Vanuatu, also in Papua New Guinea and is the one that turned up in Cairns Australia. Fortunately for Australia the one swarm that did turn up did not have varroa on it.
I have heard presentations by Denis Anderson where he said where both mites occur naturally together in south east Asia they only reproduce on their natural host and have not switched.
