We as humans are making a distinction on what "hearing" is.  Sound of all sorts is vibrations.  Why can they not pick up these vibrations while flying?  The ability to sense vibrations and process them into data seems perfectly reasonable to me.   While it may not be what we perceive as hearing,  still works.  Is echolocation sight??  No,  but it sure works the same.
