animal feed crops. But according to a thorough review of animal slaughter
records by UC Davis, animal health appears to have improved in recent years."
Average age at slaughter is 18 months for beef cattle and 4 years for dairy cattle. Their natural lifespans are 15-20 years. Faculty at Davis are looking at "feed-based health technologies to improve animal health". To achieve production goals at slaughter, animals must be intensively "managed". If modern cattle, genetically selected for rapid growth, are not given the correct nutrition they become weak and ill. Improvement in their health at slaughter is probably due to improvements in their nutrition.
