> Does anyone have experience with field testing nectar availability
I use a low-tech, indirect method. I have a hummingbird feeder that I fill with heavy syrup and hang by the hives if I am unsure whether we are fully in a dearth. If there is a flow on, it is ignored by the bees (although wasps will visit). If we are in a dearth, it will be honeybee central.
You can also walk the area in question around midday and see if they're working it.

Where my hives now smell like a mixture of butterscotch and feet, because the goldenrod is coming in.
