What were the mite levels prior to treatment? This sounds a lot to me like
what happens when mite levels exceed 9 or 10% in the fall. At that point
mortality during treatment is high and colonies tend to rapidly dwindle. I
have tried both MAQS and OAV in this scenario and the end result was
similar. About 30+% of colonies are too small to winter and have to be
combined with others. I find that might levels are above treatment
threshold in early August and have been treating with at least a single
strip of MAQS and sometimes two at that time. They then usually need a
September follow up.
