This discussion is making me consider Charlie's point: that a single round of brood is not enough to produce enough diutinus bees for the winter cluster. The math needs to work. I have not yet resolved this question to my satisfaction.
Let me throw out another zip.... 2 years ago I bought 100 packages of shake out bees, after frost. We caged them 8 days, then hived them. 80% or so made it thru a rough winter. They drew out 15-18 frames of wax and filled it with HFCS, absolutely ZERO brood in any of them. Not one shread. And most survived just fine.......
