What surprised me was the amount of syrup feeding.  I spoke to those who
fed singles until they weighed 45 kilos.  That amount of "honey" does not
leave room for brood or open cells, which I had previously (and apparently
erroneously) assumed were necessary for the formation of the winter cluster.

What apparently occurs is that once the bees consume a bit of honey in the
core, they can then commence with the necessary winter broodrearing.
