I'm curious about Scott's reference to "sugar related bee health issues."

My colonies don't have extended periods without flight, so I don't have
opportunity to test for sugar issues.  However, a number of beekeepers from
Northern climes have told me that colonies winter better on sugar syrup
than on some natural honeys.

Could anyone please tell me what kind of sugar health issues during
extended wintering that they have knowledge of?
