Hello Peter,
Despite there is a different take on nosema if it kills bees or not by various researchers, under our climatic conditions nosema is a serious disease. It kills bees
We annually monitor 1000's of bee colonies since 2006. We have found that it takes about 2years for nosema to build up if bees are not treated with fumagillin. Sure enough there is no surprise it kills bee colonies. I have operations that did not treat for 2 years and the bee losses were up to 75%. When you walk to the bee yard or into bee wintering facilities you smell dead bees like rotten meat. Varroa levels in these colonies were almost null but nosema spores were millions of spores. Our research showed that the levels of nosema in spring or early summer can be indicative for troubles in the following winter if you don't treat.
I also have challenged my friend Dr. Guzman when he said nosema does not kill bees. This is true under his conditions in Ontario. We can't generalize this statement about nosema and bee kill. We have to acknowledge that there are regional differences in nosema effects on honey bees. I hear you when you say about cause and effect. I am open to suggestions from your end to explain the cause of bee kill in cases where nosema spores levels are too high/ millions.
