Debbie Hewitt makes a good point. When I started beekeeping in 1967 it was
with Dadant Jumbos from an old timer. Only about five years later, when I
was unable to buy new Jumbos to expand, did I change to Langstroth. There
is nothing wrong with using the Jumbo for a brood nest only.
In fact, in France Jumbos are almost exclusively used as brood nests, never
lifted, and all supers put on top.
